Mentalbeskrivning hund  MH

Mentalbeskrivning hund (MH) är svenska brukshundklubbens standard-iserade beskrivning av hundars beteen-den på en bana bestående av nio olika moment. I beskrivningen avläses lek socialitet, nyfikenhet, rädsla, jakt, aggression samt skottfasthet.  

När 40 individer av en ras, lika många tikar som hanar, gjort beskrivningen skapas ett rasmedelvärde och utifrån det kan man beskriva den individuella hunden,

MH används för att beskriva vilka ärft-liga mentala egenskaper en kull har och det hjälper uppfödare att planera sin avel utifrån individers och rasens medelvärden. 

MH är framtaget med tanke på bruks-raser och det mäter inte en hunds alla egenskaper i alla situationer. 

Hur kom vi igång med MH för TM

Mitt intresse för MH tog fart 2007 då magisterstudenten Eva Maria Wergård vände sig till TM ägare med uppmaning att göra MH i forskningssyfte.  Fram till den dagen hade endast en TM gjort MH beskrivning och fått det registrerat i SKK´s databas. 

Ett MH är en beskrivning av hunden. Den säger inte om hunden är bra eller dålig. Då du gjort ditt MH kan du slå dig för bröstet o säga; - Jag bidrog till kunskap om rasen och till att uppfödaren får respons på sitt avelsarbete. Du kan också utifrån din hund resultat få idéer om hur du kan hjälpa din hund att utvecklas vidare.

När väl en hundras är beskriven och fått sin rasprofil kan uppfödare låta sina valpkullar göra MH för att se hur avelsutfallet blivit i förhållande till rasprofilen. Kort sagt, det blir en chans för uppfödaren att rikta sin avel och också en chans för rasklubben att följa rasens utveckling. Lämplig ålder för MH anses vara runt 12-18 månader.  Ju äldre hund desto mer har miljö och erfarenheter påverkat hunden.

Efter 2007 års MH inom ramen för urhundsstudien började jag bjuda in till MH för mina valpköpare och  andra intresserade. Först på inhägnad bana i Södertälje och sedan på bana i Enköping. Flera andra TM-uppfödare, Mimayin, Klastorpet, Magma Chambers har också bidragit med sin entusiasm för att vi sedan 2022 har en rasspindel, ett första medelvärde bland svenskfödda TM, som beskriver vår ras. Härifrån tar uppfödarnas egna visioner om hur mentaliteten skall bevaras och riktas vid.

Loyal in the words truest sense

"Tibetan mastiffs are very loyal, but not in the way most people use the word. People tend to see loyal as an extension of obedient. Obedient they are not, and there have been very few obedient tibetan mastiffs in the past.

They are too smart, too much of their own individuals to fall into line and do as they are told.
They think, draw conlusions and act on their own. This was one of the most important traits over the millennias of guarding their homes and people in the Himalayas.
A fast decision could be a matter of life or death; there was no time for "asking for permission" or hesitation, or else livestock would be killed by predators, belongings would be snatched by thieves or the hooman servants would die.
They are loyal in the TRUE sense of the word. I looked it up in the dictionary and this is what it says:
Loyal - firm and not changing in your friendship with or support for a person or an organization, or in your belief in your principles.
Pretty much sums up the breed.
They stick by their hoomans, always. Not by command but by heart. And the rest of the world can pretty much be dead to them.
This is one of the reasons why I love this breed.
Loyalty is a rare thing these days and we are all lucky if we can find some." -

Medfödda beteenden hos TM

Om TMs medfödda beteenden med tips om hur man kan förhålla sig till en sådan självständig ras.

19 oktober 2018"Tibetan Mastiffs are guardians of people and of property. That is their job, they are genetically programmed to do their job. Some are much more serious than others however there is NOTHING WRONG with a highly protective TM. They are not broken, they are not damaged, they are doing what every cell in their body tells them to do, these are the same cells that tell a Lab to go after a ball that's thrown.
Those that believe you can "train" him out of doing his job completely misunderstand the breed and dogs in general. It's genetic. It's ingrained and if you try to take the dog's job away, you will have far worse "problems." You can no more train your brown eyes to be blue than you can train the protectiveness out of a TM.
30 years ago it was the rare TM that would bite. They would stop what they viewed as an intruder but you rarely heard about the skin being broken, some ripped clothing, some bruises but it was just a warning.
The breed has changed over time with the swapping of breeding dogs all over the world, the introduction of other breeds into some lines. Now it's the rare TM who retains the traits of the "old TMs."
We can't say it enough, it's not socialization, it's not training, it's your dog. You can get a puppy and do everything right and he can still grow up to decide that no one except his immediate family is okay and he can be a danger to others. The ONLY option is to manage the dog, not to change him. Accept that you have a highly protective dog and put locks on the gates and doors and control who opens the door, who walks the dog. That is all you can do. We have seen TMs absolutely destroyed by "trainers" who use all sorts of aggressive methods trying to "tame" them. They usually end up unsalvageable.
Your TM is doing his job, he's protecting you and your home. Love him for that, accept him for what he is and adjust your life to manage that."
